Our Leader, Ruth, talks us through the emotions and imagery in Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons.
Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is such an iconic work for a violinist – what is your favourite part to play?
That’s a bit like asking what your favourite food is – it changes! I love so many parts of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons – the summer storm always gets the audience going. Being “drunk” in autumn and slipping around on the ice in winter are probably the most fun parts to play when you can be free and wild and unpredictable! I love Fabio Biondi’s recording with Europe Gallante which is so full of energy and excitement.

How does playing with LMP as a soloist compare to leading the orchestra?
It is always an honour to step out in front of my own orchestra – I feel the support of my LMP friends and I am aware that I am playing solo with my own team which feels much more comfortable than playing as a soloist with other orchestras. Being a soloist requires different skills to leading and I have to be convinced by my musical decisions so that I can convey them effectively to both the orchestra and the audience.
